Agents Of Good
Sometimes in the moments when we have just committed our worst mistake, we can realize a part of us that we may had denied for a long time: the goodness within us. We then with new eyes can see the wrongness of our ways opening the doorways for our soul to rise.
After my note last week I have continued to ponder about humanity's capacity for destruction and hate. After some contemplation, it seems to me that our worst actions and our worst people are really the minority and not the majority in us. I look at our past and I see that after so many wars, after so many fights, humanity has prevailed. We have advanced, we are still here alive and growing.
Yes, there are many dark aspects to us; yes, we continue to make the same mistakes, again and again, and yes we can hate and we can kill. There is also a lot of poverty and many homeless people (physical and emotional) in this world and yes, there are even more that are sick and hungry (physical and emotional). We can spend hours listing all of our problems, but I think it is important that we look at where we are in relation to our history.
Not long ago humanity didn't have many books available for people to read and not that far ago one of our biggest repositories of knowledge in Alexandria was destroyed. Also not that long ago almost any man could rape any woman he could take and it wasn't many years ago when women couldn't vote in many countries.
In the not so distant past many children and mothers died during the birthing process and many more died because of infections. Too recently most people didn't have the opportunity to be entrepreneurs and become masters of their time and owners of the product of their efforts. And not that far in our history we had the inquisition.
So, lets look at where we are today: We have the capacity to spread our ideas in milliseconds. People have access to more knowledge (through the internet) than ever before in history. Yes, there are still billions of people that don't have this access, but we have billions that do!
Today teenagers and people in their 20's are becoming successful entrepreneurs creating tools that are bettering our lives. Because of our digital interconnectedness we have become more aware of what is going on in the world.
Today it is more difficult for anyone to commit atrocities and be able to hide them. As humanity becomes more aware, connected and organized we have become stronger to the point of using our power to hold leaders accountable and even bring them down if needed.
Today many people in the world are free to follow and express their religion; yes there are many that are still suppressed by doing so, but many others can and do!
Today we have children being born prematurely that in time (through our technology) grow to become strong and healthy; we can even help fetuses heal while in the womb. Today we have antibiotics, penicillin, aspirins and the technology to heal many illnesses.
We have advanced enough in our sciences and materialistic pursuits that we now question even more the nature of what it means to be human, our consciousness and intelligence. We also question the value of our life, our purpose and mission.
We have still a long way to go, there is much to do, if we want the whole human race to have a decent physical, emotional and intellectual existence. That will take time and that will take effort, not only from a few, but from all of us.
It is very easy to criticize and blame when we are doing nothing to change what we don't like. Instead of using that waisted effort to attack those that are doing something, why not use that energy to actually change things for the better, and that means starting with ourselves.
If we don't like war, lets stop fighting with ourselves and others; if we don't like poverty, lets work to provide more value and opportunities for others. If we don't like the unethical behavior of our leaders, lets us build ourselves to be ethical people, ethical leaders and businessmen. If we don't like how depressed and ill many are, let us connect with the most people that we can, let us become more humane and let us use our efforts to bring the benefits of technology to the many.
Let us build people that have the capacity, the ethics and humanity to become the leaders of our world. Lets us be honest in our exchanges and lets become useful members of our society. I believe if we all did this the world would be better.
I don't think all of our problems would be gone, no, but many would and more than anything in doing something pro-actively, we can feel that we are members of a team, humanity's team. In doing something, we bridge a psychological gap of feeling separated from others. In doing so we may feel proud of being active participants in making a positive change.
For all those that are hopeless, negative and sarcastic when faced with options to do something, I say: Stop it!
In hopelessness we surrender all possibilities to change and we give an open way to all those that want to control and take possession of humanity's most precious assets: Our minds and our beliefs, our experience of life. What is at stake is our belief that we are good and powerful, the belief that we are part of a Universe that has as its base Love.
For these reason's I have chosen to participate with people and organizations (which means organized people) to influence the world for the better. There are many people attempting to make things right and all of them need human resources and money to achieve their aims. Each of us can choose to support them or lead one of these causes.
Having said the above it is important for us to choose where to focus our efforts. We need to support the ones we believe can be the most effective to create permanent positive change. I have done some of that research and I have made a list of the ones I believe are doing good things and are effective; I have shared this list on my website on the section "I support".
Of course there are many, many others and I would encourage you to make your own research. But if my efforts can be of any value to you, please inquire about the ones I have listed.
I wish you the best in your efforts to be and do better.
With love,
Edgar Boone
